Our tuition-free, public charter school serves students in pre-kindergarten to grade six with a positive culture that honors diversity, collaboration, & optimism.
Every student is unique. We believe their education should be as well. We are committed to embracing rigor in all academics, and we aim to exceed grade-level expectations by using personalized learning plans.
Our students and staff are excited to meet and work with peers of all backgrounds. We study and celebrate differences, and embrace the vital importance of respect, tolerance, and acceptance of all. We want our campus to be a place where everyone can feel heard, included, and safe.
Literacy is recognized as central to academic pursuit and success in life. We focus not just on teaching literacy, but also on why literacy matters, and what it can do for each student in their lives. Our students don’t just learn to read, they read to learn.
I love this school … It is a very diverse teaching staff. And so many family-oriented events. My son has been there for 2 weeks and we have already had a book fair and will be joining family game day with them before spring break. He will be there until 8th grade if they add JR high.

Our staff is dedicated to creating an excellent learning experience for each student and their families. We maintain high standards of academic rigor while never losing sight of the individual. Our teachers truly care about each student’s success and offer one-on-one learning experiences wherever possible.
We believe in learning what you are passionate about. Every Wednesday, our teachers choose a subject they love to teach, like pottery, cooking, chess, and more. Students have the opportunity to lead their own learning by choosing whatever subject interests them the most and attending for a trimester!
At MELA, learning is a community effort. Our school works with local partners to expand students’ opportunities in unique ways, such as interactions with therapy dogs through Canine Inspired Change, a free concert day through The Minnesota Orchestra, or participating in a school garden sponsored by The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.
